Hospice in your Home
Many people think that hospice care is only available for patients who are in a “hospice house” or their own home. This is not true. Hospice care is provided wherever the patient calls home. In addition to a personal home, hospice care can be provided in a group home, assisted living facility or nursing home. Even more importantly, hospice care can allow the patient to remain in their home environment surrounded by family and friends through the end of life.
The care needs of patients who are nearing the end of life normally become more intense. This may mean caregivers are no longer able to meet their loved one’s care requirements without additional support. Hospice assistance can mean that caregivers are not forced to choose between hospitalization or nursing home care during their loved one’s last weeks and months.
With the supportive care that our hospice team provides, hospitalizations at the end of life are usually completely avoided. Often, with hospice care, the patient is able to remain in their current residence until death – whether it is a personal home, group home, assisted living facility or nursing home. This is their home – the place they know and are comfortable and where they have caregivers they know and trust. Hospice can help them spend their final days in a familiar environment surrounded by those they love, making this a better experience for everyone.
